Every target needs a bullseye, and in curling, that’s the button.
Dead Center
The button is the small circle at the very middle of the house, the innermost ring in that bullseye pattern at each end of the sheet. It’s the spot every curler is aiming for in their head, even on shots that aren’t meant to land there.
The Reference Point for Everything
Skips talk about the button constantly, even when a shot has a totally different purpose. You’ll hear things like “a few inches off the button” or “biting the button” used to describe where a stone ended up. It’s basically the zero point that the whole house gets measured from.
The Shot Everyone Dreams About
A perfect draw that lands right on the button is one of the most satisfying shots in the sport. It’s quiet compared to a big hit, but every curler knows exactly how good it feels. If you ever see a team celebrate over a rock that barely moved, there’s a good chance it just found the button.
